The Puno region is located at an average altitude of 3,827 meters above sea level and some areas of the region reach up to 6,000 meters above sea level., which is why altitude sickness is more noticeable in this department.

Before traveling, it must be clear that this region is characterized by having a semi-dry and cold climate throughout the year, due to the fact that it is located in the high Andean zone of Peru. The average temperature is 8 °C, reaching a maximum of 15 °C and a minimum of 1 °C.

The best time to travel to Puno

We are convinced that the month of February is ideal for traveling to Puno, since important and attractive festivities are celebrated such as La Virgen Candelariacharacterized by religious, festive and cultural activities. For those days, the height and the cold are left aside.

However However, it is recommended to visit Puno between August and early December when pleasant weather is recorded. In addition, it must be taken into account that the rainy season -which brings with it mudslides, landslides and roadblocks- occurs between the months of December and January.

Traveler tips WAT

Puno conquers tourists for art, music, typical dances and the practices of ancestral customs that continue to be practiced until today. To enjoy your stay we recommend check the weather with our agency days before your trip to know what kind of clothes you want to bring. Always pack warm and comfortable clothes.

Secondly, we suggest you visit a doctor before the big day to avoid problems with height. Perhaps, the doctor can recommend some medicine to mitigate altitude sickness like 'Sorochi Pills' or gravol for dizziness. We also recommend drink coca tea, slow down your walking pace, eat light foods and be well hydrated.

Average temperatures

We leave here the average temperatures so that you can take the necessary precautions:

  • 16.8 °C is the highest temperature and is recorded in November
  • -1.3°C is the lowest temperature and is recorded in the month of July.
  • Rains with greater intensity are recorded in the month of January)
  • It is recommended to visit Puno after or before the rainy season that occurs between December and March.
