- The name "Colca" has its roots in the Quechua language, one of the most spoken indigenous languages in South America, with a rich cultural heritage and a wide variety of dialects. Derived from the word "Qullqa," which means "storehouse" or "grain depot," it suggests a connection to the ancient storage facilities built by pre-Inca civilizations on the canyon slopes, used to store food such as corn, potatoes, and quinoa, which were crucial to the economy and subsistence of local communities.
- The canyon slopes are home to ancient agricultural terraces, a legacy of pre-Inca civilizations later utilized by the Incas as a cultivation method. It involves the rearrangement of farmland through the construction of platforms on different levels called terraces, aiming to retain or eliminate water and reduce the slope of the hill.
